An Unknown Arabic-Turkish Poetic Dictionary: Lugat-ı Visâlî
The Arabic and Persian languages have got a great impact on the organization and development of classical Turkish literature. The poets and editors who grew in this tradition previously resorted to internalise both of the scientific and literal works that were written in those languages, through the translation, and then, they wrote the original works as combining the materials from those works with the domestic factors. However, those languages did not lose their importance in the processing history and it became a significant need to learn Persian language in the literal field and Arabic language in the scientific field. Many works have been written as the source in order to meet the need in time. One of those works is the poetic dictionaries. Poetic dictionaries got a great attention in terms of making the language learning enjoyable and increasing the words’ persistency in mind, and there has been an increase in the number of such works in time. Even if there are thise which were written for the different languages such as Romaic, Armenian, Bosnian, the poetic dictionaries were written generally in Arabic-Turkish or Persian-Turkish. It is known that there are nearly twenty Arabic-Turkish poetic dictionaries in the classical Turkish literature. One of them is the poetic dictionary which is our study’s axes and which was written by a poet with a visali pen name in 16th century. This work which has a single copy now was made according to the all of the letters’ organization and has got 488 couplets. This poetic dictionary that nearly 1900 Arabic words’ meanings are given in Turkish consists of 40 quatrians which comprise the section of dictionary. The form and content properties of Lugat-ı Visali will be emphasized and it will be introduced.
