THE ALIENATED CHARACTERS IN THE EARLY TURKISH NOVELS DUE TO THE MISCONCEPTION OF WESTERNIATION
Ottoman State has taken the first official step to partake in the Western civilization by declaring the Tanzimat Fermanı in 1839 (Imperial Edict of Reorganization) which launched the Tanzimât period of reforms and reorganization. These reforms first commenced in the military field, and then gradually showed themselves in many fields such as administration, dressing, cultural, social issues etc. During this period, the new type of novel genre in Ottoman-Turkish literature was regarded as an important tool in the application of the new cultural and civilization project by the intellectuals of the time. This article will focus on the novels of Felatun Bey ile Rakım Efendi, Araba Sevdası, Mai ve Siyah and Şıpsevdi written in the early period of Turkish Literature. It analyses the alianetaion phenomenon of their characters, who become stranger to their own cultural and social identity because of their misconception of westernization. The alienated characters are mostly appeared to be in the middle of the clashes between the values of the West and East.
