The Views of the Students Who Are Learning Turkish as A Foreign Language on Slang
Language is a multilayer system. Slang is one of the colourful and creative layer of this system. It is widely used in daily life, especially in casual speech. For that reason, knowing about slang may ease the communication. In this study, it is aimed to determine the view of students, who are learning Turkish as a foreign language, on slang. In order to learn their views, a questionnaire which is consisted of 17 item was developed. To choose the items for the questionnaire, 3 domain expert were consulted and a pilot study conducted with 10 students. After the pilot study the questionnaire took its final form. The questionnaire delivered to 86 students who are learning Turkish as a foreign Language at Gazi University Turkish Language Learning Research and Application Centre and Ondokuz Mayıs University Turkish Teaching, Application and Research Centre. According to results majority of students think that slang should be included in language learning. Likewise, most of the students think that slang can be taught in in-class activities. However, teaching slang by course books and the usage of slang in the texts in course books are not reacted positively.
