Altaic Apostle Vasili İvanoviç Verbitski: His Life, Missionary Activities and Altai Studies
Altai where is one of the most important homeland and Turkish tribes, which is autochthonous constituent of the region, have become the target of expansionist and colonialist policies of Tsarist Russia since the beginning of the Seventeenth Century. The region was systematically and gradually fell under the domination of Russia through the establishment of the city of Kuznetsk. After that Altai region was transformed into a part of Tsarist Russia by building new cities, fortress and border posts. Local elements resisted through long ages against tyrannizer and brutal administration, Russian occupation, heavy taxes, the confiscation of rich underground and surface resources by force, the placement of Russian immigrants in the region. However, they faced the ruthless methods of Russian military forces and were obliged to submit to the Russian administration., Russification and Christianise policies were applied among the local constituents, which belonged to Shamanism and the Old Turkish Religion (Gök Tanrı/Caelum God Belief) from of old times, along with Russian housing policy to conversion the Altai into a permanent Russian country. One of the actors of this policy was Verbitski, who was known for his works in the fields of Altaic languages, culture and ethnography.
