Proud Elements In The Ottoman Socıety From The Perspective Of The 16thCentury Poet Edirneli Nazmî
“Mağrur” is an Arabic word meaning “proud, arrogant, braggart”. While there are other concepts that have similar meanings with pride, only the word ‘ucb’ is used as a term of morals like pride in the literature. It was stated in the sources that ‘ucb’ is different from pride. While pride means being condescending towards other people, ucb means bragging by liking oneself without being condescending towards others. Pride, which means “consoling oneself by being deceived with temporary values” corresponds to “arrogance, bragging”. It is a known fact that devil guides people to pride by deceiving them with goods, science, rulership and lustful desires. Proud people fall into the hands of liking themselves due to their qualifications. They begin to think themselves superior to other people. Pride and other words derived from this word are included in twenty seven verses in the Quran. The meaning of pride is dominant in most of these verses as “being carried away by the world, being deceived”. According to the Quran, the temporary and deceiving world, to which people attach as if it has a value, possesses a great threat to the people’s religion and sense of afterlife. In the Quran, it can be observed that people with pride and arrogance are criticized with various examples. In Muslim communities, which take the Quran as principle, “proud” is a criticized element. Edirneli Nazmi, a 16th-century poet, reflects his period in his Divan like other poets. In this study, the concept of “pride” in the Divan of Edirneli Nazmi is discussed. The “proud” elements, which are criticized in every period, were determined from the perspective of a Divan poet. Explanations were made within the framework of the verses about these elements. Therefore, it was aimed to contribute to future cultural studies on Turkish society.
