Yunus Emre in Novels Portrayıng the Foundatıon of the Ottoman State
Yunus Emre, due to his historical mission and literary personality, was ahead of his time and had became one of the sources of inspiration in Modern Turkish literature. Accordingly, he occupied a major place in the Turkish novels as an important fictional character. The majority of the novels which talk about Yunus Emre are undoubtedly the works on his biography. However, a specific function is assigned to him in terms of maintaining the order in Anatolia and his historical importance is underlined in novels portraying the foundation of the Ottoman State. It is possible to say that Devlet Ana (1967) by Kemal Tahir and Konak (1973) by Mustafa Necati Sepetçioğlu set an interesting example in this respect. Both authors, who included Yunus Emre as a secondary character in their fictional work, set him a witness to the foundational process of the state and interpreted his function in this process. Firstly, in the present study, the place and importance of Yunus Emre in Turkish culture was mentioned, and general information was provided on historical novel genre in Turkish literature. Secondly, based on two novels, Devlet Ana by Kemal Tahir and Konak by Mustafa Necati Sepetçioğlu, it was revealed how Yunus Emre is portrayed in novels that narrate the story of the foundation of the Ottoman state. In the overall evaluation, some characteristics of the novel Çatı (1973), a chronological sequel to the novel Konak, were discussed as well as some biographical novels on Yunus Emre, and the related subject was investigated by following the plot.
