From Old-Style Prison to New-Type Prison: Prison And Prisoner Life As A Public Space In Adnan Veli Kanık’s Work Titled Mapusane Çeşmesi
Adnan Veli Kanık, one of the forgotten names of Turkish literature in the Republican period, is one of the humorous story writers, a significant part of his works remaining in newspapers and magazines. The author, who first stepped into the world of literature with journalism, wrote various articles in media such as Vatan, Akbaba, Dolmuş, Tef, Pardon, Papağan, Taş-Karikatür and Külah. The author's book named Mapusane Çeşmesi (1952), which is a story-interview type, is a remarkable work in terms of Turkish literature history. The stories in the book, which has not been examined in detail until today, have remarkable features in terms of law, justice, state bureaucracy and social structure of the 1950s. In this study, Mapusane Çeşmesi, which was determined to be built on two planes in terms of subject and theme, will be examined in terms of prison as a place where literature is produced, and the life styles of convicts in these places. In the analysis, the main issues that the author focused on prison life will be determined, so it will be possible to introduce the Mapusane Çeşmesi and give information about its position in the history of Turkish literature.
