A General Look At The Turkish Epıc Studies Based On The Old And New Epic Studies
The importance of the epics, which are the texts in the oral tradition including the awareness of being a nation using the characters in them, has been understood by the academia for a relatively short time. The reason behind the interest in the oral folk creations, which increased after the exploration of America, was understanding and interpreting Old Greek culture, which is considered as the inspiration for western civilization. Additionally, there were many other reasons such as building identities in line with the movement of nationalism. Based on these reasons, Homer’s Ilyada and Odessa was the spark of the first step of a long epic studies journey in the west. Today, the studies aiming to understand how these epics of Homer, about which it is claimed that they are oral in spite of the written texts at hand, were created, and to analyze the system of oral culture, are still conducted in various topics. With all these in mind, this article firstly deals with the first phases of the epic studies of western researchers, who use Turkish epic tradition in their analyses, and the reasons and results of the trends in their epic studies. Then, some general information regarding Turkish epic studies by the Turkish folklorists and linguists are provided in the current article.
