The Camel In The Words Of Çukurova Mınstrels
In the Çukurova region, the nomadic life style, which depends on animal husbandry, has prevailed throughout history. Due to the climatic conditions of the region, depending on the season, the tribes descending to Çukurova in the winter had to migrate to the plateaus that were cool with their camels in summer. Camel has lost its old importance with the transition to agriculture and consequent settled life as a result of the resettlement policy which was started during the Ottoman Empire and continued with the establishment of the Republic. With the mechanization of agriculture, transportation and transportation, the need for camels has been completely eliminated. Çukurova has been one of the regions where the minstrel tradition is alive as well as the nomadic life style. These two cultures kept their existence by intertwining and feeding each other. Among the minstrels of Çukurova, there are minstrels who live the nomadic life style personally, descend from those who live this tradition or live in settled culture (villages, towns or cities), but observe, hear, listen and read from the written sources. When the poems of the minstrels of the region are examined, it is seen that the camel, which is an important cultural element of the nomadic life style, is subject to poems in various aspects. With this article, in the 32 Çukurova minstrels’ poems, it is found that camels are classified according to their types (tulu camel, yoz camel); names taken by age (köşek, dorum); the colors (gray, yellow, purple, black camel); bells and decorations, pack animal, appearance, walking, idioms and proverbs, folk beliefs and analogy items.
