Music and Dance in Gypsies in Turkısh Literature
A fondness for music and dance is among the most obvious characteristics of Gypsies. These two elements are also very important in making sense of their lives. In this study, we will focus on how these two basic qualities of Gypsies are processed in literary works. As the examples are mostly in the genres of stories and novels, we will focus on these two genres, and we will touch on the examples in poems as they come.
Ortoyunu (the game played in the Square), begins after the songs and dances of Gypsy köchek (Gypsy dancer), Chengi (female gypsy dancer) and curcunabaz (rambunctious), and then after Pişekar (one of the main characters) talks to zurnacı (clarion player). In Ahmet Mithat Efendi's work Gypsy, Ziba's success in the music lessons she studied is emphasized as well as the beauty of her voice and her mastery in violin: "Free walking in the meadows and countryside"," singing mani (it is a type of folk poetry) and singing songs under a tree", is among the most distinctive qualities of Gypsies. Osman Cemal Kaygılı, with his Gypsies, is undoubtedly one of the most vivid writers in Turkish literature that depicts Gypsies with their fights, dances and songs. In Hussein Rahmi's”Coptic wedding", the music played at the wedding and wedding are presented as part of a primitive and natural ceremony in parallel with the fact that gypsies live a life identified with other elements of nature, animals and plants. However, in the works of Sabahattin Ali, who takes the human essence and conscience as a basis in his art and processes all his material with an aesthetic plan and style that will touch a person, the characterisation of Gypsies both in terms of identity and their music is much different from that of Husseyin Rahmi. Therefore, the spirit of the times, the artistic understanding of the authors and their thinking structures were reflected in different aspects in the literary works in which the Gypsies' mastery of dance and especially music are described, as in every subject of literature.
