The Daily Lives And Women of Nomad Gipsies In Turkish Literature
A chronological reading through gipsy narratives in Turkish literature reveals that after a certain period of time writers generally had positive opinions about nomad gipsies. While Hüseyin Rahmi, Refik Halit and Selahattin Enis were picturing unfavorable gipsy portraits with weak characters on moral grounds, this negative attitude completely changed with Ahmet Haşim, Sabahattin Ali and Halikarnas Balıkçısı. Nomad gipsies were also described as freedom lovers and free spirits in their daily routines decorated with pleasent landscapes by Osman Cemal, Sait Faik, Bedri Rahmi and Melih Cevdet. The daily occupations and properties of women were mostly the points of focus in these texts about nomad gipsies. “Nomad Gipsy” became the symbol of a pure, simple living style, nostalgic journeys and freedom in modern times which human beings became alienated from nature. For a person who is tied to a place, equipped with the data of the settled life, who misses “the moment”; nomad gipsies are parts of nature like earth, trees, sun and moon. They can adapt everywhere, are not registered to anywhere, doesn’t collect anything and they deserve credit because of these.
