Nasreddin Hodja Jokes Hidden in Bekçi Destanı
Abstract Jokes, which constitute an indispensable part of Turkish culture, have continued their existence with both oral and written sources while being transferred from generation to generation. Although jokes are a short narrative type, we see the reflection of life in this short narrative. All the disruptions and impressions in social life are expressed critically in jokes. While the joke is being told, the listener/reader not only has fun but also learns from this narrative. Joke types are as important as the contents of the jokes. Among the joke types, Nasreddin Hodja perhaps contributed the most to the formation of the humor structure of Turkish culture. Nasreddin Hodja jokes contain the cultural characteristics of the period they belong to, depending on the general characteristics of oral cultural products. While jokes are transmitted from generation to generation, they take on a different form in each narrator, and accordingly, the cultural values in jokes may also change. Written sources as well as oral sources are an important factor in the transmission of jokes. In this study, 124 Nasreddin Hodja jokes reached in a manuscript were transcribed and presented to the scientific world in order to contribute to the studies to be done on this subject. While I was working on the watchman in a manuscript called Destan-ı Bekçi, I encountered Nasreddin Hodja jokes behind the epic text. It is surely difficult to say that all of the Nasreddin Hodja jokes identified belong to Nasreddin Hodja. Our esteemed professors have similar views on this issue. The manuscripts in which Nasreddin Hodja jokes were determined are introduced and the existing jokes are included in the study.
