Hayrullah Efendi and “Şık Beyler” (Civilised men\gentlemans)
Hayrullah Efendi(1818-1866) ,who was a self-indulgent spendthrift during the reign of Abdülaziz,was also a historian and the head physcian.Hekimbaşı Abdülhak Molla,who died in 1854 ,was his father.Hayrullah Efendi was a descendant of rooted “Hekimbaşılar” family.He wrote “Yolculuk Kitabı(Avrupa Seyahatnamesi)” which is the first trip guide in Tanzimat reform era.However,he is more well-known as Abdülhak Hamit Tarhan’s father.His luxury addict life style reminds of the gentlemans(civilised men or “şık beyler”) who were mentioned in the first humour newspapers that were published in Tanzimat reform era in 1870s.These spendthrift gentlemans were targeted by the humour newspapers due to their luxury addiction,indebtedness and poverty.In this article,Hayrullah Efendi’s life style and the situation of the gentlemans which were mentioned in the humour newspapers are going to be compared with each other properly.Therefore, similar and dissimilar aspects are going to be addressed.
