Words of Western Origin in Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoglu Novels: Yaban As A Sample Study
Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoglu is one of the leading authors who contributed to Turkish language with their works in Turkish literature. The author comes to the fore with the use of the words of Eastern and Western origins that enter Turkish from outside, both in the second post-constitutional period and in the Republican period. He attracts attention with the use of foreign words in his works, especially in memoirs, short-stories, plays and novels. Therefore, in this study, Yaban, one of the most read and discussed novels of Yakup Kadri, was examined in terms of words of Western origin. In the introductory part; first, a brief information is given about Yakup Kadri's literary life, then an evaluation is made about his preferred style based on the sources about him. Afterwards, the words of Western origin in Yaban were listed in alphabetical order. The ordering was based on the Turkish Language Association's Türkçede Batı Kökenli Kelimeler Sözlüğü (Dictionary of the Words with Western Origin in Turkish). First, the meaning of the words detected were given and then the first sample sentences in the novel that contain those words were quoted and the page numbers were indicated. For the parts that the word appears for the second time or more, just the page numbers were written. In the conclusion, based on the findings obtained from Yaban, a short evaluation was made about the use of the words of Western origin in the author’s novels. It was seen that Yakup Kadri, specific to Yaban, preferred words of French origin most in his novels, followed by Italian and Greek words respectively. It was observed that in his novel, which focuses on the contrast between intellectuals and peasants in the post-Republic period, he used words of Western origin more compared to his early short-stories and novels.
