Some Remarks on the Etymology of Old Turkic burnac ‘Jug’
It is much more difficult to study the origin of Old Turkic words than to study the origins of the words of other periods of Turkish language. The etymology and structure of the Old Turkic burnac has not yet been definitively explained. It is possible to think of a few possibilities for the origin of burnac. Burnac is related to Turkish verb stem bur- or bür-? Can we think of a loanword root for burnac’s origin? It seems hard to say anything definite in this matter. But there is something definite, it is not that there is any direct relation with burun ‘nose’ as Sir Gerard CLAUSON claims.
